Call for Artists - Exhibit “The Language of Flowers”
February Open Art Show
In the month of February, Talbot County Visual Art Center is sponsoring an open art show called “Language of Flowers.” This show is open to all artists 18 and above who live on the Eastern Shore. All media are welcomed and the theme is all about flowers. For centuries flowers have held a special meaning to humankind. They have had a symbolic meaning from their medicinal properties to the hidden language of flowers from the Victorian age. Ophelia in “Hamlet” does a speech talking about the symbolism of bamboo-for longevity, green willow-false love, jasmine-love and lily-purity. Many a man has sent a nosegay of flowers to his attended in the Victorian age to tell of his feelings; red roses for passion, daisies for innocence, forget-me-nots- remembrance, etc. Artists have painted paintings with hidden meanings or made them larger than life, all around flowers as the subject matter.
This show is to be focused on flowers and the possible hidden meanings behind say a vase of tulips. In order to enter this show, the artist must make art dealing with flowers then drop off his/her work on Feb. 1, Wednesday between 2-5 pm. The opening will be February 3, Friday from 5-7 pm at Talbot County Visual Art Center. The art must be suitable framed with a wire for hanging and all 3-dimensional pieces must come with their own pedestals. Members of Talbot County Art Center may enter 3 pieces of art for $10 and non-members may enter artwork, 3 pieces, for $15. There will be judging of this show for Best of Show, 1st through 3rd place and honorable mentions.
